Vertigo and Dizziness Q & A

What causes Dizziness?

You may attribute your dizziness or imbalance to signs of aging, or other circumstances. However, in almost all cases, there is a medical issue that we may need to explore. If you suffer from vertigo, you may be experiencing intense forms of dizziness in which the spinning room feeling leads to nausea or vomiting.

The question is what causes dizziness and balance issues?

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo is a culmination of diseases that affect the inner ear and, subsequently, your sense of balance. BPPV can lead to different levels of vertigo.

Brain Nerve Cells

Nerve cells in the cerebellum are responsible for balance and coordination movement. If there is a problem with the nerve cells, it may lead to a balance problem.

Cervicogenic Vertigo

Your dizziness may be caused by damage to the nerves, ligaments, and bones of the neck. You may also feel muscle spasms or restricted motion in your neck.

Spinal Cord Disorders

You may be suffering from a compressed cervical cord that interacts with the cerebellum. Although this condition is painless, it can cause dizziness and imbalance.

Vestibular System Dysfunction

This system contributes to the sense of balance and spatial orientation. If there is a dysfunction in the system, you may experience multiple symptoms.

Related Symptoms of Dizziness or Balance Issues

If you suffer spinal cord disorders, vestibular system dysfunction, or BPPV, you may experience the following symptoms;

  • Nausea

  • Car sickness

  • Crowd anxiety

  • Back muscle fatigue

  • Multiple episodes of dizziness

If you have an underdeveloped cerebellum, you may experience the following symptoms;

  • Unsteadiness and prone to falling

  • Clumsiness in the hands and feet

  • Slight shake in the hand

  • Episodes of disorientation

  • Chronic neck or back muscle tightness

What is Vertigo?

Vertigo is often associated with other forms of dizziness or imbalance. However, it does differ somewhat from light dizziness or occasional spells of imbalance. Vertigo is any temporary or ongoing spells of dizziness. Contrary to popular belief, vertigo is not a fear of heights. It can cause a sudden fear of heights due to the dizziness or imbalance that occurs if you are high off the ground.

Vertigo is caused by problems in the brain or inner ear and is associated with sudden head movements, inner infection, and inflammation, Meniere's disease, tumors, decreased blood flow to the base of the brain, multiple sclerosis, head trauma, and neck injury, migraine headaches, or complications from diabetes.

Vertigo is not just a general feeling of faintness. It is a rotational dizziness that can quickly trigger nausea, clumsiness, shakes, disorientation, or chronic neck or back muscle tightness.

Chiropractic Treatment for Dizziness and Imbalance

Chiropractic manipulation may be your best option for treating vertigo or other related issues. Chiropractic adjustment combined with neuromuscular therapy provides several benefits;

  • Strengthens the vestibular system

  • Restores balance by improving the nervous system

  • Restores balance

  • Re-aligns neck joints and muscles with the brain

  • Clears the debris that settles in the vestibulocochlear apparatus

  • Repositions bony particles to their appropriate position in the ear

After you undergo an initial assessment, we can help you decide the best course of action for treating your condition that is leading to dizziness, imbalance, and vertigo.
