What is health Coaching?

We use a 4 step process to help people achieve their health goals

What is a Function Health Coach?

By Cason Lehman

Simply put, as a functional health coach, my job is to inspire my clients to BELIEVE that they can heal.

Whatever health or life challenge they are facing. To do this properly, we have to start shining a light on the things in our body, our life and most importantly our mind that aren’t working in favor of the goal. We have to investigate factors that most practitioners don’t take into account.

When you and I work together, we take a serious look at the stress levels in your body (physical & chemical) and mind (mental) across all areas of your life.

In this personalized investigation of the stressors, we take a deep dive into your past and present health, life and mental status. In doing so, we use a holistic approach, shining a light on the facets of being human. This gives us the awareness of finding the stressor together so that we can work synergistically to put our attention in and on the right modalities to heal the challenge. We go deep beyond the surface level both practically (material) and energetically (emotion).

For example, if a client of mine wants to lose weight, not only do we look at what they are eating, when they are eating, how they are eating, where they are eating, etc. but we also look at why they are eating.  We look at how this food or “not food” (Standard American Diet) makes them feel before, during and after eating. This often overlooked component of emotion plays a powerful role in our actions towards health or towards disease.

I love getting into frontal lobe questions like that stimulate a consciousness of self-reflection like;

  • Are you eating this way because somebody told you that it was healthy?

  • Do you want to lose weight so you feel better about yourself?

  • Do you lack self-confidence? Do you feel unworthy?

  • Are you eating to fill an emotional void?

This allows us to use our human gift of metacognition. We become aware. Or we think about what we’re thinking about. This is the first step in changing anything. To change ANYTHING we must become aware of what the problem is and how we are thinking, acting, feeling and believing when that problem is at play.  This means we have to look at ourselves and reflect on our state of being throughout a typical day.

It is from here that we can create and organize a plan that specifically meets your needs. This plan is your homework. During our sessions we hand craft a plan of action developed to accomplish actionable steps that you KNOW exactly how to do. Not only that, but we are going to make sure that this plan inspires the heck out of you.

This plan looks different for every single person (there is no one size fits all), but sticking with the example above in weight loss we are obviously going to create a specific meal plan that inspires you to want to make healthier eating choices. Like what to eat and what not and when to eat and when not to eat. But primarily we are going to create a plan of action that will heal the mental aspect of the “why” or even “why not” we eat certain foods.

This plan will enable you to get out of the box of your analytical mind and see beyond your habitual status quo. You will create a daily practice of self-care in order to know (remember) yourself on a soul level. By stepping outside of the box (status quo) every day you will learn to rewire your brain and body to the new “you” that you desire.

As your personal coach, I will be there with you through every step of this process, guiding you through the highs and the lows. This means I will be your accountability partner, holding the standard for what we set out to accomplish and continue to organize the changes along the way.  This is a partnership. And we all need this coach because It’s not always easy – if it was – everybody would do it. So as your guide I am always available, if you may have any questions, concerns or fears during your healing journey. I’m with you every step of the way. That’s my passion and my purpose!

This accountability and reassurance is crucial for success.  Oftentimes, if left to figure it out on our own, our ego will talk us out of pushing to our edge. As your accountability partner, I will push you right to the edge of your fear in a safe and achievable fashion.  This “edge” is different for every single person. These breakthrough wins give your mind, body and soul a new perspective about your old “problem” and you literally begin to believe that you are, in fact, worthy of healing.

This change in belief takes practice and most importantly repetition. We must be vulnerable and willing to let go of control. What we often forget is that nobody knows the answer more than our own body and soul. Nobody! As we push to the edge of what our ego is trying to get us to avoid, we start to crack open a part of our heart that has been energetically offline. We start to remember who we really are. We come back home.

To succeed, however, we must repeat this practice daily. Repetition is the mother of all skill (thanks Tony Robbins for that one!). So we are going to put this plan to action and execute. And to do that we have to practice. Again and again. Nothing will change if we don’t take action. And how will we ever know what we’re capable of if we don’t “just do it”. From there we “just keep swimming”.

As we glide through the healing journey together we will start to see results. You will see a positive change in your life. We will learn how to “see” and “feel” these results. This is another skill that takes practice. Results fall into place in a way that you will least expect.

Feedback is extremely important, for it shows us if we are on the right path. This is where a coach is important, because we have to know what we are looking for in the form of feedback. This is so we can pivot if need be. As your coach, if the feedback that you are getting isn’t resonating with you, we will make the necessary changes in our plan in order to keep the inspiration flame firing. We simply pivot and keep the momentum of inspiration going.

If we are going to heal anything we have to increase our energy. At the same time we have to be willing to let go of predicting the outcome. We have to trust that we are taking the right steps. Paradoxically, we are not going to force, manipulate or control our own healing. We will learn that even in the wrong steps we can trust that this whole process is happening for us and not to us. In this realization it is much easier to pivot back to our true north. This creates resilience in our mind, body and soul because we know that we can overcome adversity. This persistence while being vulnerable is what produces the most dramatic results.
